Alternative To Smoking Ban
May 13, 2008

YORK — Folks attend a York City Public Works Committee Meeting to take part in the hot topic of going smoke free in city parks.

Mayor John Brenner wants to ban the use of all tobacco products in York's 24 parks.

The Mayor is hoping his proposed tobacco ban will help clean up the parks and eliminate second hand smoke.

But some committee members said legislation may not be needed to solve the problem and signs reminding smokers children play in the parks, could be enough.

"Often if you put up signs like that and use education and remind people of the health aspects of smoking, that could have as much an impact or even more impact than a government mandate," said York City Council Member Cameron Texter.

York City Council could vote on the proposal as early as May 20th.

If passed people caught smoking in parks would be fined 25 dollars.
